STAINLESS STEEL BRAAI’S

What is stainless steel?

Stainless steel is a type of low-carbon steel with at least 10.5% chromium by weight. The addition of chromium provides the steel with its distinctive stainless and corrosion-resistant characteristics. It is what hardens and toughens steel and increases its resistance to corrosion (rust), especially at high temperatures. This happens because chromium forms an unseen layer of chromium oxide on the steel surface, creating a barrier against corrosion. Even if this protective layer gets damaged, it can self-heal when oxygen is present, a process known as passivating. There are various grades of stainless steel, so it’s essential to be aware of the differences in order to make an informed choice.

Yes, you get 3 different types of stainless steel that we use at Chef to fabricate some of our products.

Chef uses 3 different grades of stainless steel for our products. The three grades are:

Grade 430 – This grade has good steel formability (the ability to be bent into shape before being damaged), but has lower temperature and corrosion resistance compared to the other two grades we use.

Grade 304 – Chef’s preferred choice of stainless steel for most of our braais. The most commonly used stainless steel (18% chromium, 8% nickel), it offers good temperature and corrosion resistance.

Grade 316 – This is the second most common grade of stainless steel; it is also known as marine stainless steel because of its superior resistance to chloride corrosion. This grade contains molybdenum which provides extra protection as mentioned before.

  • Corrosion resistance
  • Fire and heat resistant
  • Easy fabrication
  • Long-term value
  • No need for coating

Stainless steel gas grills are preferred for their sturdiness and ability to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. They are less prone to rust and corrosion compared to other materials, making them a long-lasting option for outdoor use.

We have service centres across the country where you can have your gas braai serviced professionally. View our service centres here

When used properly and following safety guidelines, stainless steel gas braais are safe to use. However, always exercise caution when operating any gas-fuelled appliance and keep children and pets away from the braai while it’s in use. Additionally, check for gas leaks regularly to avoid potential hazards. For more information, see our blog Safety Tips For Your Chef Gas Grill

Regular maintenance is essential for optimal performance. Clean the burner tubes, grease trays, and other internal components at least once a month, especially during heavy usage periods. This will prevent clogs and ensure even heat distribution.

Stainless steel gas braais are designed to withstand various weather conditions, but it’s best to cover the braai when not in use, especially during heavy rain or snowfall. This will protect the grill from excessive moisture and extend its lifespan.

To clean a stainless steel gas grill, follow these steps:

  1. After cooking, turn off the gas supply and let the grill cool down slightly.
  2. Use a grill brush or scraper to remove any food particles or residue from the grates.
  3. Wipe the exterior surfaces with a soft cloth or sponge and a mild soapy water solution.
  4. Rinse off the soap with clean water and dry the surfaces with a soft cloth.
  5. Periodically, check for any signs of rust or corrosion and address them promptly.

Enamel Cookware FAQ's

ENAMEL COOKWARE

What is enamel cookware?

Enamel cookware is kitchenware made from a metal core (usually cast iron or steel) coated with a layer of enamel. The enamel coating provides a smooth, non-stick surface and adds durability to the cookware.

Enamel cookware offers several advantages:

  • Non-stick surface: The enamel coating provides a natural non-stick surface, making it easy to cook and clean.
  • Durability: Enamel is resistant to scratches, stains, and rust, making the cookware long-lasting.
  • Versatility: Enamel cookware can be used on various heat sources, including gas, electric, and induction stovetops.
  • Aesthetics: Enamel cookware comes in a variety of colours, adding a touch of style to your kitchen.
  • No need for coating

Our Chef Enamel Cookware can handle moderate to high heat, but it’s not recommended to use it on the highest heat setting for prolonged periods. Excessive heat may damage the enamel coating, leading to chipping or discoloration.

Most enamel cookware is dishwasher-safe. However, to prolong its lifespan, it’s better to hand wash your Chef Enamel Cookware using a gentle detergent and soft sponge.

Enamel cookware is generally not suitable for use in the microwave, as metal-based cookware should not be used in microwave ovens.

It’s best to avoid using metal utensils with the Chef Enamel Cookware, as they can scratch the enamel coating. Instead, use wooden, silicone, or plastic utensils to preserve the non-stick surface. For more information, see our blog How to Care for Enamel Cookware or Best Utensils to Use in Chef Enamel Cookware

Yes, our Chef Enamel Cookware is oven-safe. However, be sure to check the manufacturer’s guidelines for specific temperature limitations to prevent damage to the enamel coating.

To clean Chef Enamel Cookware:

  • Allow the cookware to cool before washing.
  • Hand wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge.
  • For stubborn stains or residues, soak the cookware before cleaning.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as they can damage the enamel surface.
  • Dry the cookware thoroughly after washing to prevent water spots.

For more information, see our blog How to Care for Enamel Cookware

Our Chef Enamel Cookware is generally safe for use with acidic foods. However, prolonged cooking of highly acidic dishes may cause slight discolouration or dulling of the enamel surface over time.

Our Chef Enamel Cookware is ideal for a wide range of cooking tasks, including frying, sautéing, braising, and simmering. It is not recommended for high-heat cooking methods like searing at extremely high temperatures.
